Welcome to FishSpy Echo Pro!

The next stage of evolution in the FishSpy project, Echo Pro is the fusion of innovative live stream underwater camera technology and a cutting edge portable echo sounder device. Why settle for just sonar technology when you can have the power of two - Sonar and live video?

Whats in the box?

Getting Started

Charging - FishSpy Echo Pro (FEP) requires charging for approximately 3 hours. On the first occasion we recommend charging your Echo Pro for 8 hours (note: you cannot overcharge FEP)

Unscrew the charging port cap in an anti clockwise direction (use a 2p coin) taking care not to damage or dislodge the orange seal around the charging port.

Under the screw cap you will find the USB charging socket. Connect the small end of the USB charging cable into this, and then connect the larger end into a power source with a USB compatible socket (e.g a phone charger wall plug, computer USB port, a laptop USB port, or a portable power pack) Once connected after a few moments a red light will illuminate, which indicates FEP is now being charged. Upon completion of a full charge, the red light will turn off and a green light will illuminate.

Unplug the USB cable and re-fit the charging port cap. To tighten, turn it in a clockwise direction with a 2p coin. Screw the cap into position firmly, but do not over tighten or cross the thread. Take extra care not to twist or dislodge the seal from where it locates into a notch in the FEP housing. (Note: Absence of the rubber seal will result in water ingress. This is not covered by warranty)

When not used for a long period of time, FEP should be periodically charged every few months to help maintain the lifespan of the battery.

A mobile phone or tablet and the FEP App are essential for use of the product. The app is compatible with Apple iOS and Android operating systems.

Compatible with:

  • iOS v. 10 or later
  • Android v. 5 or later

The app is available from the Apple app store or the Google play store. Search for 'FishSpy Echo Pro' select the app and download. Ensure you agree to any app permissions that appear on the screen.

Once the app is successfully installed, it is time to connect FEP to your mobile device using FEP's built in WiFi (note: no internet signal required)

Turn FEP on - Wet your finger and hold it against the two sonar pins for a few seconds, ensuring you bridge the gap between the pins. Alternatively drop the FEP into the water at your feet (Note: ensure charging port screw cap is fully tightened before putting into water) This will close the circuit, and activate your FEP. (Note: FEP will shut down automatically after 5 minutes if out of the water)

FEP will then start generating and transmitting its own WiFi signal.


Android & Apple: Open your mobile device WiFi menu. After a few moments FEP will show on your WiFi list as a WiFi device, designated with the letter EP and a unique number (For example EP31263) select this and hit connect. There is no need to enter a password.

With Apple, once connected you may get a notification saying 'no internet connection' with an ! mark - this is normal. With Android when connected for the first time you may get a notification 'connected but no internet' - this is normal. You may also have a notification 'this network has no internet access. Stay connected?', if so select yes and tick the 'don't ask again for this network' box.

After the first connection, as soon as FEP activates it will now automatically pair to your device.

Note For optimum connectivity irrespective of operating system turn off your mobile internet data. If you are using an Apple product turn off the WiFi assist function if present. Sometimes Android devices have a feature called Smart Network Switch. This feature, if present should be de-activated.

Launch the App - Once successfully connected you are now ready to launch the FEP App! Tap the Echo Pro App icon to launch.

Camera - Opens camera mode. If FEP is connected to your device, after a short pause you will now see live camera footage on your screen.

Sonar - Opens sonar echo sounder mode. (Note: This function will only work if FEP is in water of over 0.5m depth. If it is to shallow it will flag as 'invalid depth')

Mapping - Opens mapping mode. Here, you can download maps, review stored maps, analyse depths and GPS data.

History - Review and scroll through stored sonar plots, allowing you to access and analyse previous trips on the water. Apply your stored sonar plots to lake maps.

Settings cog - Change settings such as Sonar beam width, depth unit measurement, fish alarms etc.

On The Water

With your FEP fully charged and your App installed it's now time to head out to the lake!

Casting from the shore - First, secure your mainline to the attachment point on the side of the FEP. Ensure your knot is tied strongly, or tie a large figure of eight loop in your mainline and pass the FEP through it. We recommend the use of suitably strong line, for example minimum of 15lb if using mono and a minimum of 30lb braid. A shock leader may be a consideration if extreme distance is required.

Next, Activate the FEP by wetting your fingers and holding them over the sonar pins. As soon as the pins are bridged, this will close the circuit and turn the unit on. If you have connected FEP previously, your device will now pick up the signal and automatically connect within a few moments (See connection steps above if you have not) you now have 5 minutes to make a cast before FEP turns itself off. Open the app and select either Sonar or Camera mode.

Now you are ready to cast. Ensure you have a suitably strong rod that can cast a weight of around 100g (3.5 oz)

Cast gently and at short range at first, until you are familiar with the casting weight of FEP.

Once FEP impacts the water it will begin transmitting data via it's own WiFi network to your device, with a range of up to 100m (depending upon environmental conditions & your mobile device specification)

Using FEP from a watercraft - you may use FEP from any type of floating vessel, e.g a boat, float tube, kayak or skiff. Simply secure a length of line to the attachment point (1 to 1.5m is usually adequate) then attach the other end of the line to a suitable point, for example through a rowlock or to a D ring.

Activate the FEP by wetting your fingers and holding them over the sonar pins. If you have connected FEP previously, your device will pick up the signal and automatically connect within a few moments (See connection steps above if you have not) you now have 5 minutes to make a cast before FEP turns itself off. Open the app and select either Sonar or Camera mode.

Then, gently drop FEP into the water next to the side of your craft. Sonar data will now start to transmit, as will Camera footage if you have selected that mode.

Sonar Mode

When selecting Sonar mode for the first time, you will be prompted to create or resume a Sonar session. Creating a session allows you to store information about a specific venue. If you move to a different venue, create a new session specifically for that venue. Resuming a session allows you to continue storing data for the location. You can also resume sessions in history mode.

Once in the water, Sonar data will begin scrolling on the echo sounder display from right to left, showing information such as depth, structure, weeds, fish and bottom contours. Scan the water as you slowly reel FEP back towards you. Keeping the rod tip high helps produce a steady and smooth retrieve.

Should the water become too shallow or too deep for the sonar to work, it will stop scrolling and display invalid depth (note: this is not a fault)

Interpreting The Sonar Screen

Sonar flasher - On the right hand side you will see a green vertical flasher, this represents the sonar beam traveling to the bottom and bouncing back. Any breaks in the beam indicate fish or structure. The shape of the flasher at the bottom indicates hardness - a rounded or domed shape is a very soft bottom, whereas a flat shape is a hard bottom.

Main Sonar display - Here the bottom shows as orange. Weed, silt and structure are green, and fish are yellow or white. Bottom colour intensity various according to hardness. A stronger return will be a stronger colour. A 'double' sonar return indicates a very hard bottom, for example stone or pebbles. Data always scrolls from the right to the left, with the newest information being on the right hand side of the screen.

The depth reading is displayed in the bottom right hand corner. You can choose your preference of feet or meters in the settings menu.

The bottom left hand of the screen shows GPS co-ordinates. These co-ordinates will display if GPS signal has been found. GPS signal depends on terrain and satellite position.

Fish are displayed as 3 different symbols, according to size. Each symbol will have a depth reading next to it, allowing you to work out the level of the fish in the water. You can choose to toggle the fish alarm and fish symbols in the settings menu and interpret just the raw data. (Note: Due to the nature of sonar technology, FEP will only detect fish lower than 0.5m in the water column)

The Sonar beam operates using a choice of two frequencies, 280hz or 100hz.

100hz is the wide beam setting, with a sonar cone of 47 degrees. The wide beam is useful for finding depth, structure, contours and to see if fish are present in the general area. 100hz works effectively to 30m depth (100 feet) and as shallow as 0.75 meters (3 feet) It is most useful as a general purpose beam in deeper water.

280hz is the narrow beam setting, with a sonar cone of 15 degrees. This setting is perfect for discovering detailed information about where fish and features are. The 280hz beam works effectively to 20 meters depth (60 feet) and as shallow as 0.5 meter's (2 feet). For detailed sonar, and shallower water use 280hz.

You can change between the Sonar beam frequency's in the settings menu. It is always worth changing between beams several times during the session to build up an accurate picture of your swim.

Camera Mode

At any time you may switch to camera mode. The camera uses 640p x 480p resolution for optimum streaming speed and is specially adapted for poor light conditions. Camera mode allows you to explore, check and confirm underwater features that would normally be impossible to identify using conventional Sonar. For example, in shallow water if the FEP sonar display shows 'invalid depth' simply switch to camera mode and continue your feature finding. The camera can also be used to confirm features, for example thick weed beds, clear spots and snags. Switching between camera and sonar modes will also give you an idea of what the data on the sonar mode readout truly represents.

Stream live - The camera operates a live video stream up to 100m range (depending on conditions and device used)

Record - To record, hit the record icon (round red dot). The dot will then turn white to indicate a recording is being made. The footage will then be stored on the in-built SD card, which has a capacity of 8GB and 5 hours of storage. To stop a recording hit the record icon again, which will turn back from white to red. (Note: Recording will continue until record function is turned off, even if Echo Pro is disconnected from your device.)

Play back - Echo Pro must be connected. Select the square playback icon. You can then select your video recordings from the play back list. Hit the play button to watch. You can re-name or delete the files if you wish. Files are dated, with the newest recording at the top of the list. Note: In playback mode, videos cannot be skipped through, but they can be paused.

File transfer - In playback mode, you can download recorded FEP video footage directly to your smartphone or tablet. On the right of the video file you will see 3 white dots. Tap this, then hit 'download' on the selected video to begin the transfer. You will get a notification on the screen when the download begins and also when it is complete.

To watch downloaded files on your mobile device, you will need to download VLC Player, a free app available on Andriod and iOs app stores.

How to watch downloaded videos on Android:

Once the video is downloaded from the Echo Pro, it will be stored in the following folder location on your device: Internal storage > Movies > EchoproVideos

To play, open VLC Player and open 'Directories' in the drop down menu. Open the 'Movie's folder, then open the 'EchoProVideos' folder. You will then be able to play the videos using VLC.

Should you wish to transfer to a PC or desktop computer, file transfer the video recording from the Echo Pro to your phone or tablet, then connect to a computer using your phones USB lead. The video files will be found in this file location: Internal storage > Movies > EchoproVideos

How to watch downloaded videos on Apple:

Once the video is downloaded from the Echo Pro, it will be stored in the following location on your Apple device: 'Files > On my phone > FishSpy Echo Pro > Videos

Use your built in 'File' app to locate the videos. Once the videos are located, open the file with VLC Player.

Anchor point - FEP has a bottom anchor point, allowing you to attach a small weight by a piece of fishing line. If it is very windy, this allows you to keep the Echo Pro in one position, so you can monitor an area using the camera - for example a hole in a weedbed, under a snag or over a pre-baited swim. It can also be used to attach a length of fishing line and a hookbait so you can use FEP as a bobber or float, allowing you to watch fish take and interact with your bait - live on the screen!!


The mapping function allows you to create a bathymetric map of your chosen lake using FEP's built in GPS technology. You can access and study your fishing maps offline at any time, without having to connect with FEP to review your stored maps.

Download your map - Before you map a lake you will first need to download the area before you begin. To download a map you will need an internet signal. You can do this at home or on the bank. So do not connect to FEP yet. Use your mobile data or an internet WiFi network.

Hit the round 'home' icon on the mapping screen; this will take you to the lake (if you are there) or home in on your local area. From there navigate around the map with your fingers to the desired location. You can scroll and re-size the selected area of the map you wish to download. Once you have selected the lake hit 'download' - you can now name your map, which will be stored in your devices memory.

Now, once you connect and begin using FEP, navigate to 'maps' and select the appropriate area from the list. Whenever you are using the sonar function, it will now store depth information on that map, as long as you have selected it prior to use. If you hold your finger over a dot on the mapped area it will display the depth and GPS co-ordinates for that spot.

The mapping function uses a colour scale from 0 to 32 feet, green being the most shallow, red the deepest. Anything over 32 feet is shown as red. GPS mapping accuracy is determined by a number of factors, including terrain and satellite position.

At any time you can review a map, select the map you wish to navigate too and select it.


Echo Pro stored Plots - Here you can access your sonar trace sessions for any given day or a long term campaign. Swipe right using your finger to scroll through the stored sonar trace profile. You will start at the last recorded spot, and scroll backwards in time to the left. (Note: Fish icons will not be displayed, only raw data will be shown.)

Review a map - To navigate to the map of the selected sonar trace, choose 'review map' from the option menu. The map will then appear, displaying areas you have mapped. If you hold your finger on the map over a coloured dot, it will display depth at that point along with GPS co-ordinates.

History mode allows you to continue mapping a lake over a period of many repeat visits. To resume mapping on the same lake, go into your Stored plots and select the desired sonar trace. Then select 'resume session' from the list. This allows you continue to map the same lake whenever you visit.

Hit the settings cog Icon on the home screen, the sonar screen, the camera screen or the mapping screen to take you into the settings menu.

The settings menu allows you to change the FEP Sonar beam frequency, Depth unit measurements, and toggle fish alarm and symbols. Select any changes then navigate back.

Within the Settings you will find a sub menu 'Buoy Status' this will show you your SSID name, battery % status, video file storage % and if a Software update is available. If a software update is available, select it and follow the instructions on screen.
